A leading supplier to nail salons, OPI Products, announced in March that it would begin removing toluene from its products. Last year, the company said it was removing dibutyl phthalate.

The grant came after public health experts at a Springfield hospital found that six Vietnamese nail salon workers had miscarried, while others had rashes, fungal infections and asthma.

They might be women of childbearing age. They might bring children to the workplace. They may have less access to information about proper use because they might not be as fluent as the general population. These are all factors that go into a situation of creating needless exposure to chemicals."
